DIFFERENT AUDIO PRODUCTIONS

Diegetic:

Diegetic sound/ music that is perceived as being made by an object or person on screen also within the scene universe. This means anything off camera but still in scene is a Diegetic sound.

Non- Diegetic:

Non-Diegetic sound/music/voice that has been added on top.

External Diegetic Sound:

External sound is within the world of the characters and what they all can hear.

Internal Diegetic Sound:

Internal Diegetic Sound is within a single character's mind that they can only hear. For example psychotic voices in their head, their conscious talking.

Foley Sound:

Foley Sound can best be described as sound effects recorded during post-production while watching the edited picture. It is intended to blend with the rest of the soundtrack, which includes dialog, music or other recorded effects or ambient sound. Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to films, videos, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality.

MY SOUND RECORDINGS

Sound effects:

Any sound artificially produced, reproduced from a recording, etc, to create a theatrical effect, such as the bringing together of two halves of a hollow coconut shell to simulate a horse's gallop; used in plays, films. In the context of motion pictures and television, sound effects refers to an entire hierarchy of sound elements, whose production encompasses many different disciplines, including:
  • Hard sound effects are common sounds that appear on screen, such as door alarms, weapons firing, and cars driving by.

Music:

Music is an art form, and cultural activity, whose medium is sound. General definitions of music include common elements such as pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm. vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. mass noun. Music used in a film to accompany the action and create atmosphere.

Panning in sound:

Here below is a picture diagram what panning in sound looks like:

Panning refers either to the stationary position of a sound (left to right or right to left). Panning helps create a wide immersive and 'wide' sound field. It helps position curtain objects or actors on screen.

Here is a video to watch a virtual barber workshop video. They use panning from left to right for a realistic sound.

Movement of Sound:

Best To listen to panning clips of movement of sound videos on headphones to get a more realistic experience.

In the baby drive opening title sequence. They use non -diegetic sound - Music baby is listening to whilst introducing the scene whilst using diegetic sound by adding background noise like cars, people etc. Movement in sound / panning has been used. Where he moves the audio of the specific object or ambient sound gets louder and the sound goes from L - R or R - L. Panning sound also gives the audience a more realistic experience.

Ambient / background Sounds:

Ambient sound means the background sounds which are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc. Background noise is an important concept in setting noise levels. Background noises include environmental noises such as water waves, traffic noise, alarms, extraneous speech, bioacoustics noise from animals, and electrical noise from devices such as refrigerators, air conditioning, power supplies, and motors.

Example of Ambient Sounds:

Dialogue / Voice Sounds:

Sound dialogue- is characters talking to one another in a film. Sound effects- are used to draw the audience in and make objects sound real, and Music- is the mood of what is happening in the scene or throughout the movie. Explain how the different categories of sound are being used in your chosen film. In the Wizard of Oz sound dialogue, sound effects and music are used throughout the film. Voice (or vocalization) is the sound produced by humans and other vertebrates using the lungs and the vocal folds in the larynx, or voice box.

Automatic Dialogue Replacement (ADR):

ADR is a method of superimposing dialogue that has been recorded in a controlled, acoustically treated space. Automated Dialogue Replacement is the process of re-recording dialogue, during post-production, in synchronization with the picture. This technique is widely used in the film industry, and it is recognized as an industry standard. The actors, recording engineer, and the sound editor are the important people in re-recording the dialogue.

I have added video examples of each topic talked about. This give a more clearer understanding how to do the curtain techniques discussed and why we use them and also how they sound like after done.
